Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Is there a preferred method of assessment for learning outcomes in a major or minor?
    No. Each department is different with a unique mission.  However, departments should use a triangular approach including both direct and indirect assessment methods suitable to that department’s mission.
  2. Does our accrediting association (SACS) consider us in non-compliance if we are not meeting our learning outcome goals?
    No. SACS wants us to define the goals for every academic program in the College and demonstrate progress toward meeting those goals while using a variety of discipline-appropriate assessment methods.
  3. How often should learning outcome goals be set, assessed and evaluated?
    Regularly, probably at least annually.
  4. What is the process for reporting the learning outcome goals and related assessment processes?
    The Departmental Annual Report that is submitted to the Dean of  Wake Forest College at the end of each academic year.
  5. What assessment methods with relevant results might already be available at the University?
    The Office of Institutional Research ( has available multiple resources including senior and alumni survey results that can be compiled and analyzed by respective majors.
